CLARENDON COUNTY, SC (WIS) -
The fifth trip was the charm for a group of Midlands residents who wanted to bag a huge alligator.
Travis Mclees of his West Columbia and his fiance, Leanne Hartley of Gilbert, had gone in search of a big one four times, but had no luck. That's when they enlisted the help of their friends Tim and Josh Koon.
On Sunday, the group of four spotted the 12' 6" monster in a Santee canal near Highway 45.
Leanne says within an hour of beginning the hunt, they spotted the gator. After only about 25 minutes Travis, with the help of the group, got him close to the boat and shot him several times.
She says they hooked the gator with treble hook and line then shot him with bow and gun.
"We never got to weigh him, but many veteran alligator hunters said [it weighed] anywhere up to 1000 pounds," said Leanne.
