COWPENS, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A South Carolina Highway Patrol trooper was injured in a wreck on Interstate 85 on Tuesday morning, according to deputies.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol said the crash happened at 8:48 a.m. on I-85 northbound near mile marker 83 on the Spartanburg and the Cherokee County line.

Lt. Tony Ivey with the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office initially reported that the crash involved a Cowpens officer, but said it actually involved a trooper who was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Ivey said drivers should expect delays as deputies investigated the crash. The left lane was open but the right lane was blocked until the scene was cleared.

Cowpens firefighters were also assisting at the scene.

A witness who works nearby at CPC Livestock Nutrition said the accident happened while it was raining. The witness said the trooper hydroplaned and no other vehicles were involved in the accident.

Deputies confirmed that the trooper hydroplaned on the wet roadway, then tried to regain control of car but slid across the interstate, ultimately flipping the vehicle.

Ivey said because the trooper was wearing his seatbelt, he received only minor injuries. No one else was involved in the crash.

The trooper was given a ticket for driving too fast for conditions, though that did not mean he was speeding, Ivey said.

The Highway Patrol reported numerous accidents across the Upstate Tuesday morning, including two fatal collisions.

Heavy rain is expected throughout the area on Tuesday, according to FOX Carolina Chief Meteorologist Kendra Kent.
