Appliance and wire thefts on the rise in newly constructed homes

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

Thieves in Richland County are targeting some new homes before they're done being built. They're taking everything from the newly installed appliances to the wiring in the wall.

"It's happening off of Broad River, off of Hard Scrabble Road," said Richland County Sheriff's investigator Scott Blair.

Thefts at new home construction sites in Richland County is up slightly over last year -- 21 so far this year and it's not just copper wire they're taking.

"In some instances, they're taking the refrigerators, the air conditioners, as well as the washer and dryers," said Blair.

There's a black market for these appliances on social media websites. Investigators call it a crime of opportunity, and they're working with builders to combat it.

"We ask the construction crews maybe to identify the wire by a simple mark and to keep serial numbers on appliances. They've encouraged builders to secure the homes as best they can, but in some cases they're nothing more than a shell.  The costs of the thefts is so high many smaller builders can't afford to make the claims to their insurance, meaning you may pay the price," said Blair.

"The cost is so high that it's going to come back on the consumer."

Investigators are getting some help from local recyclers, but say if you live in an areas with new construction, keep your eyes open and don't be afraid to pick up the phone and dial the Sheriff's Department.

If you notice someone taking wire from a house or an appliance the Richland County Sheriff's Department wants you to call. They appreciate any tips they can get.
