LORIS, SC (WMBF) - A Loris woman is behind bars after police say her children were in a hotel room with illegal drugs when a young man died.

EMS units were called to the Carolina Inn Hotel on North Highway 701 around 7 a.m. Wednesday where they found a 21-year-old man unresponsive. Medics quickly determined that the man had died.

Inside the hotel room, Horry County police officers found marijuana, a crack pipe, cold medicine, two round unidentifiable pills and prescription bottles for Lyrics and Hydroxyz. The bottles had been refilled in the past 24 hours but several pills were missing.

Officers interviewed 29-year-old Belonda Renee Davis of Loris, who was present in the room with a 13-year-old and an 11-year-old at the time. They then contacted the Department of Social Services to take protective custody of the children. Davis was arrested for allowing the kids "to be around the illegal drug use and unsafe environment."

Booking records on J. Reuben Long Detention Center show she was charged with two counts of unlawful neglect of a child. Bond has not been set.
