CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Experts say low prices for natural gas and the recession have slowed development of wind energy off the South Carolina coast. But they say developing wind is important to the state's economy and environment.

Government leaders, researchers and environmentalists discussed coastal wind with reporters Thursday as the National Wildlife Federation issued a report on East Coast wind energy development.

Sen. Paul Campbell of Goose Creek says a state committee has set a goal of generating 1,000 megawatts of wind energy off South Carolina by the end of the decade. Campbell says winds along the Grand Strand are suitable to develop turbine farms to generate wind energy.

Chris Canevale of the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy says the state now sends $8 billion a year out of state to buy energy.
