BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) - The Beaufort National Cemetery created in 1863 is being spruced up.
Large trees in the 30-acre historic section of the cemetery are being pruned for the first time in in a decade.
About 300 trees are being pruned in work that began this week. The goal is to make the cemetery more attractive and safer.
It's the second improvement project at the cemetery in a year. In March, crews finished repairing sections of the original brick wall built in 1876.
The cemetery is the final resting place for 19,000 service members and their spouses from every major American conflict since the Civil War. The dead include 19 soldiers from the all-black 54th Massachusetts Regiment that fought at Battery Wagner near Charleston in 1863.
