COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

Dozens gathered Tuesday night outside the Columbia Convention Center near the 9/11 monument that honors the 47 fallen heroes from the Midlands.

The monument has two towers with the names of local first responders, as well as two steel beams from the original World Trade Center towers in New York City.

Speakers also honored all the heroes that still have the chance to put on a uniform and fight another day, knowing that a day may come when they may be called to give the ultimate sacrifice.

It's a gift that many attending say is well deserving of honor and praise.

"This means so much to be here and just to honor these folks from Columbia and the surrounding area that paid that ultimate price," said Air Force veteran Jay Bishop.

"I think it's very important to not only remember the victims, but the first responders that lost their lives as well due to their dedication and hard work," said Stacey Doughty.
