Folly Beach permanently bans alcohol on the beach

FOLLY BEACH, SC (WCSC) -

Clear out the coolers: alcohol is now permanently banned on Folly Beach.

Folly Beach city council voted 4 to 3 to permanently ban alcohol on the beach. It was the third and final vote on the proposal.

Alcohol has not been allowed on the beach since early July, after council put a temporary ban in place, following a fight on Independence Day.

The council voted to extend the temporary ban, which ended Labor Day weekend, to Dec. 31.

Several police officers were hurt in the July 4th incident during a scuffle with the crowd.

About ten citizens spoke before the vote, many urging council to approve a referendum to let voters decide on the November ballot.

"I would love to have seen it go to a vote," citizen Michael Riffert said.  "If everyone is so sure this is the thing, then we know which way it's going to go, but I feel like we're missing that opportunity."

Mayor Tim Goodwin voted for the amended ordinance.

"Personally, I don't like it worth a durn, but for the good of the whole island we have to make decisions sometimes and it's not what I would personally want to do or personally think," Mayor Goodwin said.
