Long road to recovery awaits Lexington Co. burn victim

LEXINGTON COUNTY, SC (WIS) -

A Lexington County woman is on a long road to recovery after she was seriously hurt in a sporting accident last month.

Christina Woodcock was burned over 36 percent of her body in a mud racing accident. Her friends say the vehicle she was riding in burst into flames. She's been at the burn center in Augusta for almost month, and her family is at home looking for ways to raise money to help with her medical bills.

Mud racing has been a pastime for the Woodcock family going back at least 25 years.

"I thought everything was fine. Didn't really give a whole lot of second thought. Thought the worst that could happen is the truck roll over on its side," said Scott Woodcock, Christina's uncle.

Scott strapped Christina into the passenger side of the mud racing truck. Moments later, he was rushing to her side to pull her out.

"I opened the door and it was like an inferno," Scott said. "The heat was totally unreal."

The truck made it around the track and actually won the race, but once it crossed the finish line, the engine started smoking and then an explosion.

"I reached in told her I was there, got her out, then another explosion happened," said Scott. "I was ready to meet the devil at that point."

The fire was mostly contained to inside the truck. Christina was pulled out and flown to Augusta.

Christina's cousin, Shannon Mengedoht, said Christina had burns from the top of her arm to her fingertips and both of her legs.

"It's really hard to look at someone you love suffering like that," Shannon said.

Shannon and Christina's best friend, Brandi Bradley, regularly visit her in the hospital. They've started fundraisers because Christina does not have health insurance.

"What we're doing for her now is mild compared to what she'd do for me, being her best friend," Bradley said.

They're holding bake sales and auctions to help out a person who, through all the pain, is focusing on better days.

"She's staying positive," Bradley said. "She's ready to come home and watch her Carolina football at home and not in the hospital."

Shannon is grateful for all the support so far.

"People all over are praying and we thank everybody for that," Shannon said.

"She is amazed at the outpouring of love and concern and prayers," Bradley said. "She told me the other day, why is everybody being so nice? Well, everybody loves her and everybody cares."

"We're just going to have to be there by her side until the end," said Scott.
