COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

A trash can is to blame for a four-vehicle accident on Interstate 126 that injured two people and likely caused thousands to be late for work Monday morning.

According to Columbia Police, the chain-reaction crash happened when a vehicle stopped on the bridge over the Broad River because of a trash can in the roadway. A second car then rear-ended the first vehicle, a third vehicle hit the second vehicle and a fourth vehicle hit the third vehicle causing it to flip over.

One westbound lane was the only part of the roadway that open while emergency crews worked to clean up the collision. Traffic heading eastbound into the city was backed up for miles as drivers tried to see what happened. Police also had the Huger Street ramp to I-126 westbound closed.

All lanes are now open.

Two people were transported to local hospitals. One person was taken to the trauma unit. The other had minor injuries.

The Columbia Police Department is investigating.
