NEWBERRY COUNTY, SC (WIS) -
The man who died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after an incident where a Newberry Police officer was shot warned his fiancee that he would shoot police and himself if they showed up.
According to the coroner, 31-year-old William Blair Frazier was found dead inside a house on Fulmer Street after a stand-off with the State Law Enforcement Division and local law enforcement officials.
Frazier's fiancee said Thursday that the two of them got into an argument Wednesday night that quickly escalated into a physical altercation. Summer Schumpert says Frazier attacked her, but she was able to escape through a back door and managed to call police and her mother from a neighbor's house.
"I could barely understand her," said Cynthia Brown, Summer's mother. "She said she was at a neighbor's house and that he'd just shot a police officer."
Schumpert says Frazier told her that he was going to kill her, kill the police, and then kill himself. According to authorities, he followed through on two of those three actions.
Officers with the Newberry Police Department were called to the home late Wednesday night in response to a domestic violence call.
According to a news release, as the officers approached the door, a "projectile" fired from a weapon went through the door and hit one of the officers in the arm.
The officer is in the hospital and listed in stable condition. The other officer was not injured.
After the shooting, more officers responded and surrounded the house. SLED agents attempted to convince Frazier to come out of the house, but were unsuccessful. A SLED robot later found Frazier dead from his wound.
Schumpert said she and Frazier were going to pick out wedding cakes on Thursday. They were planning to get married in April 2013.
Schumpert said Frazier had never been violent with her before, though his record does show multiple arrests for assault and drug possession.
"I'm just grateful that she's alive today," said Brown.
SLED continues to investigate the incident since it was an officer-involved shooting.
