50 Shades of Grace: Church sign aims to grab book lovers' attention

CAROLINA FOREST, SC (WMBF) - The Grand Strand has seen its share of attention grabbing church signs, and now one worship hall is playing on a popular book title in hopes they'll see you in the pews for their next sermon.

The sign shows the popular book '50 Shades of Grey' up in flames, with a message "What God says about Marriage, Romance, and Sex." Since the book is considered an erotic romance targeted for mature audiences, some say this is a racy message.

People who drive by the sign don't understand why a church would want to affiliate themselves with a book largely about sex. Cornerstone Church says it is making a point and wants to lead people from the book and back to the Bible.

"There's a great relationship that can be had in marriage, and then there is a sexual relationship between a man and woman that happens within the boundaries of marriage, and God says that that's good," explains Russ Bennett, the Lead Pastor with Cornerstone Church.

Bennett says the problem is that churches have not been addressing sex, relationships, or marriage.

"Sex. As a people it seems we are just enamored with it. So what we wanted to do is say ok this is what the culture is saying about love and romance. But that's what the culture, the world is saying about it. But what is God saying about it," says Bennett

The church is not condemning people who read the book, but they are taking a stand against the message in '50 Shades of Grey.'

"God has a different ideal, or idea on sex, on romance and on love," adds Bennett.

The church is using the Song of Solomon to show God's view on controversial topics like sex and relationships.

Bennett says the signs are not meant to cause controversy, but understands the shock people have when driving by. He hopes the church can start influencing culture, and not the other way around.
