MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (AP) - The new docks Mount Pleasant opened on Shem Creek are empty because shrimpers are having problems getting insurance.
Shrimp trawlers are required to have at least $500,000 of liability insurance to use the docks that opened in October.
Shrimper Bubba Rector says none of the trawlers that operate from Shem Creek can afford that much insurance. He says he got a quote last year offering $100,000 insurance for $15,000.
Cindy Tarvin says she couldn't get any insurance on her family's boat.
The town spent $6 million to buy the creek-side land and $2.5 million to build the docks and boardwalk. There are spaces for six boats.
Town Councilwoman Linda Page says officials are looking at other ways to use the docks.
