ORANGEBURG COUNTY, SC (WIS) -

Animal control officers seized 49 dogs and one cat Monday from two homes in Orangeburg County.

County Administrator Harold Young says authorities were led to a home on Carolina Avenue in Orangeburg Monday when neighbors spotted dogs on the roof of the home.  Once at the home, Young says sheriffs deputies were able to obtain search warrants and found several more animals in the home and feces throughout the house.

Young says investigators were led to a second home in the North Community owned by the same man and found several more animals living in similar conditions.

"Something like this is horrific because at the end of the day, no animal deserves to be treated like that," Young said.

The animals are in the custody of Orangeburg County Animal Control and many are being checked out by a veterinarian.  Young says the animals look "rough" and they are concerned that some animals may be suffering from mange.

"They're in bad shape, and hopefully this outcome will them in a better place," Young said.

Young says the dogs ranged in several different sizes.

"We can't say we'll be able to save all of them," Young said. "We'll have to look at vet reports and see what's best for humans."

It is unclear if any charges have been filed against the owner.  We have requested incident reports and information from the Orangeburg County Sheriff's Office but they have not responded to our request.
