Information security officials at the University of South Carolina are notifying students and staff that their personal information may have been compromised in a hacker attack.

Investigators say the "confidential, personally identifiable" information of approximately 34,000 people was exposed in the wake of a security breach on a web server at the College of Education.

Officials discovered the breach back on June 6 and worked to fix the issue that allowed the attacker to gain access to the information.

The university is mailing notifications to all people who have been impacted in this case.

University officials go on to say they are advising anyone who has been affected by the breach to place fraud alerts on their credit files with the major credit agencies.

A forensic investigation is underway to determine who gained the unauthorized access.
