The LSU wide receiving corps is one of the more questioned aspects of the team this season. With Rueben Randle now catching with the New York Giants, a talented, yet somewhat unproven group of Tiger receivers have been left behind. One of them is junior James Wright from Belle Chasse, Louisiana. Wright gives LSU a big target on paper, standing 6'2 and weighing 205 yards. Yet through his first two seasons he's only caught 7 passes for 62 yards. Can he make a bigger impact this year?
"Over the years I've grown to realize the defenses and stuff," says Wright, "Things that are hard to recognize when you first get here because of the speed of the game. But over time I've learned to get comfortable and understand how things work better."
Head coach Les Miles and first year receivers coach Adam Henry have done their best to teach and instruct #82.
"They've let me know I've got to beat man coverage. I need to be able to identify defenses and make plays on the ball. Just to be relaxed."
According to statistics released by LSU, Wright hauled in a 31-yard touchdown strike from quarterback Zach Mettenberger in the team's first major scrimmage. Wright, like basically everyone else, is very excited about the offensive possibilities this season with Mettenberger.
"Because he can make every throw," Wright says adamantly, "You never know when you can get the ball, because he can squeeze it into any hole. You always have to be ready."
With his efforts, Wright feels his confidence likewise building.
"I think I have the ability to make the play, when it needs to be made. If it's at the high point, I think I can make it. The good thing about our wide receivers…each one has the ability to go up and get it."
LSU will hold their final major scrimmage of fall camp Tuesday. If he does well, Wright could earn some playing time alongside fellow receivers Odell Beckham, Jarvis Landry and Russell Shepard.
"Every scrimmage is big, for every side of the ball. It's important to make the plays that's designed for us. And we create the confidence in the group to throw the ball."
