COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Columbia City Council has voted to rename a street near Carolina Stadium in honor of former head baseball coach Ray Tanner.

The resolution to rename the 300, 400 and 500 blocks of Williams Street between Catawba Street and Blossom Street ''Tanner Way" passed city council on Tuesday night.

Tanner, whose success lead the Gamecocks baseball team to two national championships and three straight appearances in the College World Series finals, resigned from his position as the baseball coach to accept the vacant athletics director position in July.

In addition to his successes on the field, he is also a dedicated community leader, having created the Ray Tanner Foundation in 2005 which supports organizations who care for seriously ill children, the homeless, and other charitable causes.

Honorary sign toppers will be placed over the Williams Street signs near the stadium.
