ORANGEBURG COUNTY, SC (WIS) -

A traffic collision report released by the South Carolina Highway Patrol says an Orangeburg County major was speeding just before he crashed his county vehicle on Saturday.

Major Rene Williams crashed on Big Buck Boulevard just after 10:30 p.m. Sheriff Leroy Ravenell said Williams was responding to a shooting in Bowman when the accident happened. The shooting happened around 6 p.m.

Troopers estimated that Williams was driving 70 miles per hour in a 55 mile per zone. According to the report, Williams was traveling south about 6 miles north of Bowman when he lost control, struck a utility pole, and overturned.

Williams was taken to the hospital with injuries.

It is unclear if alcohol was involved in the incident. Troopers said Williams volunteered a blood sample. That sample has been sent to SLED for testing.

Ravenell said Williams will be on medical leave until released by his doctor.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
