FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) -

Florence police arrested dozens of people in a drug round up Friday morning.

Officers with the Florence Police Department as well as a number of local agencies fought back against the crack cocaine trade in the Shoals.

At this time, police have arrested nearly two dozen people. Most of the individuals were arrested and taken into custody just after 6 a.m.

Chief Ron Tyler said the roundup is a result of a year and a half long investigation into the crack cocaine trade in Florence and Lauderdale County.

Police said they had over 100 counts of crack cocaine distribution spread between the suspects. They served 38 warrants and seized 27 vehicles.

Investigators said they purchased close to $10,000 in crack-cocaine from the defendants during the course of the investigation.

Tyler said while the operation costs a lot of money, it's worth it.

"We do take the drug trade very seriously and we are going to continue to deploy resources and assets and personnel to continue to address those issues in this community," said Tyler.

Nearly 50 officers from multiple agencies took part in the round up including Florence, Sheffield, Lauderdale County Drug Task Force, Colbert County Drug Task Force, FBI, ABI, ABC and the US Marshals.
