Statement from Tom Bryson regarding Bryson v. State Budget and Control Board:

Statement (8/14/12) from Tom Bryson regarding Bryson v. State Budget and Control Board:

As director of graduate studies in chemistry and bio-chemistry at the University of South Carolina, please understand that this is the busiest time of year for me, getting ready for the return of students for the fall semester. Therefore, please accept this as my official statement.

This lawsuit is not about the amount of additional health insurance premiums per month or paying one's "fair share".  It's about checks and balances, government officials ignoring the law and separation of powers.

If the Budget and Control Board can usurp the authority of the Public Employee Benefits Authority and deny the will of the state legislature, what's next?  If the Governor disagreed with the funding of the premiums by the state, then she should have used her veto pen to make her feelings known.  By doing it through the Budget and Control Board, she attempts to by-pass legislative review of a legislative function.

While I have agreed to serve as named plaintiff in this action on behalf of all state employees, I would ask your consideration during this busy time. All further questions should be directed to my attorney.
