Perspective: A WIS Editorial - Deadliest Roads

LEXINGTON COUNTY HAS THE DEADLIEST ROADS IN SOUTH CAROLINA.  THE COUNTY LEADS THE STATE IN FATAL CRASHES AND 68% ARE DUE TO DRUNK DRIVERS.

MOST CRASHES HAPPEN BETWEEN MIDNIGHT SATURDAY AND 3AM SUNDAY AT THE HANDS OF 21 TO 40 YEAR OLD DRIVERS UNDER THE INFLUENCE. THE HIGHWAY PATROL'S DUI TEAM BELIEVES THAT THE COMMUNITY JUST DOESN'T REALIZE  HOW BIG A PROBLEM DRINKING AND DRIVING IS.  SO FAR THIS YEAR THEY'VE HAD 35 FATALITIES AND HAVE STOPPED 411 DRUNK DRIVERS.  IN 2011 THEY HANDLED 440 CASES FOR THE ENTIRE YEAR.

THE PROBLEM IS SO BAD THAT LEXINGTON IS ONE OF 9 STATEWIDE COUNTIES RECEIVING A GRANT TO FIGHT DUI RELATED CRASHES.  A COUNTYWIDE ASSESSMENT FOUND THAT THE BIGGEST CAUSE IS PEOPLE BEING OVER SERVED IN RESTAURANTS, BARS AND PRIVATE HOMES.   SO SOME OF THE GRANT MONEY IS GOING TO EDUCATION PROGRAMS TEACHING SERVERS HOW AND WHEN TO CUT SOMEONE OFF.  FUNDING ALSO PAYS FOR 15 OFF-DUTY COPS CONDUCTING SAFETY CHECKPOINTS, HOPING TO CATCH DRUNK DRIVERS BEFORE THEY CATCH UP TO YOU.

NOT ALL THE BLAME CAN BE PLACED ON BARS AND RESTAURANTS FOR SUCH A LIFE AND DEATH PUBLIC SAFETY ISSUE….ULTIMATELY IT'S UP TO THE INDIVIDUAL DRIVER. BE RESPONSIBLE…DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE…AND DON'T LET ANYONE YOU KNOW DRINK AND DRIVE.  LIVES DEPEND ON IT.

 THAT'S MY PERSPECTIVE.  WHAT'S YOURS?
