LUMBERTON, NC (WMBF) - The suspect accused of shooting a Lumberton Police Officer Sunday morning has been named.
Chief Mike McNeill with the Lumberton Police Department says Victor Ronald Spearman, 22, was found dead in a nearby area shortly after he shot Officer Marcus Norton.
It is believed Spearman shot himself, Chief McNeil adds.
A nurse at the Southeastern Regional Medical Center says Officer Marcus Norton was treated and released from the hospital Sunday.
The Robesonian reports a suspect shot Officer Norton in the leg Sunday, and after hours of negotiations with officers, that suspect then shot himself.
Officials have not released information as to what lead to the shooting of the officer.
This is the second Lumberton Police Officer shot in just 27 days.
Officer Jeremiah Goodson, Jr. was killed July 17, leaving behind a wife and two young children. Goodson was killed outside of a gas station while trying to arrest a wanted suspect.
