Welcome to college: twins start new chapter in lives

Jacob and James Cogman have had a lot in common since birth, as most twins do.

But even though they've both come to Claflin University on full scholarships, are both very active in youth ministry, and both have aspirations of law school, they'll tell you they are their own people.

And, to add, they're both majoring in politics and justice studies.

"I think here we'll come into our own as individuals and find out more about ourselves," said Jacob.

The Cogman brothers will come into their own among 450 other freshmen, many of whom are taking part in orientation activities this week.

"I remember when my mother dropped me off at college and I was so excited when she left because I wanted to get that new college experience," said their mother, the Rev. Jonsie Cogman. "I want them to have the same experience that I had. So I promised them I wouldn't cry today."

Reverend Cogman says she couldn't be more proud knowing her two honors students are headed to school with a strong value system intact.

It's yet another thing they have in common, but something they'll need when their paths eventually separate.

"Socially, educationally, spiritually," said Jacob. "I don't want to leave Claflin the same way I came in."
