A 20-year-old man is facing charges after investigators say he beat a woman in the head with a hammer before be tried to rape her.

According to a Chester County Sheriff's report, deputies were called to a home along Pinckney Road around 5 a.m. Thursday morning to the report of an assault.

When deputies arrived, the family of a 61-year-old woman was holding 20-year-old Samuel Marcus Dye, who they say attacked the woman with a hammer.

According to the man's family, he had left his home after 4 a.m. and they felt that he had not been acting "mentally right."

Later, according to the report, family members of the woman were walking up to her home, when they heard her screaming.

The woman's family came into the home and found Dye on top of the woman, in the living room, hitting her in the head with a hammer.

Dye was reportedly tackled off the woman and the hammer was thrown out the back door of the home.

The woman told deputies that Dye came into the home and began talking about not having a girlfriend and told the woman "that he was going to 'get some' " before he hit her in the head with the hammer.

"She told him to stop [and] that they needed to pray," the report stated. "He said 'No, I'm doing this.' He then exposed himself and pulled her breast out of her shirt."

He reportedly began hitting her in the head again, knocking her to the ground.

That's when her family members heard her screaming and came in to save her.

The woman was taken to the hospital, Dye was arrested.

He's being held in the Chester County jail under charges of Attempted Murder & Attempted Criminal Sexual Conduct (rape).
