Local business refuses to sell green lasers

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) One local beach wear store refuses to sell the popular green lasers, and one hotel prohibits guests from using them on their property.

The "Whales" store on North Kings Highway said it never has and never will sell the green laser. Other stores that do sell the item said they fly off the shelves, and that's the reason they continue to sell them.

But Simone Mizrahi, "Whales" manager said her store doesn't sell them because they are dangerous.

"The famous green lasers. They're very very popular but unfortunately we do not sell them. And it's a good thing," Mizrahi said, "we want to keep everyone safe. It has been misused and that's the reason why we are not selling it and the owner, the buyer, just not interested and we don't want to have anything with the laser point."

The Crown Reef Resort along Ocean Blvd said it prohibits the use of green lasers on its property.

The stores that do sell them are only allowed to sell the green lasers to people 18 or older, but Mizrahi said she thinks there may be some additional rules the stores don't know about.

"Recently I found out that we need to be licensed to have a license through the city for the use of selling the laser point," Mizrahi said.

As for the stores that continue to sell the item that Coast Guard called a major problem, Candice Malloy said the beach wear store she works at continues to sell the lasers because they are very popular. She said she does her best to warn the buyers of the dangers the lasers can cause.

"There's no warning signs on it but I always tell people, you know, especially the younger kids. I'm like ‘just don't shine it in hotel windows or at cars, airplanes, you know shine it in people's eyes'."
