DARLINGTON COUNTY, SC (WIS) -

The former Darlington County fire chief who announced his retirement shortly after being suspended from duty in the middle of a State Law Enforcement Division investigation against him has been arrested and charged with misconduct in office.

SLED arrest warrants allege 71-year-old James Stone used inmate labor to clean his cars, clean around his home, and even clean oysters.

Those warrants also say Stone admitted to wrongdoing to a SLED agent.

Before the investigation, Stone had served the Pee Dee city for 50 years.

Stone was booked at the Darlington County Detention Center. He is expected to have a bond hearing later today.
