A lightning strike appears to be the cause of a fire in Chapin on Moonsail Circle, according to the Columbia-Richland Fire Department.

Spokesman Brick Lewis says a passerby spotted the fire and alerted the homeowner. Apparently, the homeowner had heard the lightning strike, but did not know the home was on fire.

Fire crews were able to contain the flames to one house, but there was minor heat damage to a neighboring home.

Fire officials estimate the damage caused to the home to be worth $200,000.

No one was injured.
