NORWAY, SC (WIS) -
Town of Norway Mayor Jim Preacher has been indicted by the Orangeburg County Grand Jury and suspended from public office by Gov. Nikki Haley.
According to an executive order from Haley's office, Preacher has been indicted on charges of nepotism and misconduct in office.
The charges say Preacher gave himself a pay raise without approval from town council and he hired his son to a position at the town's water treatment department.
Preacher had been arrested by the State Law Enforcement Division earlier this year on charges that he impersonated a police officer after he pulled over a South Carolina Highway Patrol trooper that had pulled Preacher over minutes before.
Preacher claims he was serving in his duties as village constable when he stopped the trooper.
According to the executive order, Preacher will be suspended until he is either acquitted or convicted of the charges against him.
As for a replacement for Preacher, it is unclear at this point if there is an order of succession in the town or if Haley will appoint someone to take over.
