Hit a Home Run for Life at the WIS Blood Drive

Every two seconds, someone in the United States needs blood. The American Red Cross and WIS News 10 urge blood donors to meet the need for emergency blood donations and "Hit a Home Run for Life" to help patients in need this summer at the WIS blood drive on Thursday August 4.

The event kicks off at 11 a.m. at 5 locations in Columbia, Lexington and Sumter:

Lexington Urgent Care
811 West Main St., Lexington
11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Palmetto Health Baptist Parkridge
300 Palmetto Health Pkwy., Columbia
11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Spring Valley Presbyterian Church
125 Sparkleberry Lane, Columbia
11 a.m.–7 p.m.

USC Arts Building - Banquet Hall
190 Miller Road, Sumter
11 a.m.–7 p.m.

The blood drive ends at 7 p.m. at all five sites. To schedule an appointment, visit www.redcrossblood.org and enter sponsor code: WIS, call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or download the Red Cross Blood Donor App. Walk-ins are welcome.

All presenting donors will receive a Red Cross T-shirt, while supplies last, one donor at each location will also win 4 tickets to a Columbia Fireflies game and one V.I.P. will get to throw out the first pitch.

Blood can be safely donated every 56 days, and platelets can be donated every seven days or up to 24 times a year.  Most healthy people age 17 and older or 16 with parental consent who weigh at least 110 pounds are eligible to donate blood and platelets.  Donors who are 18 and younger must also meet specific height and weight requirements.
