HOOVER, AL (WIS) -
If coach Steve Spurrier had his way, the Gamecocks would have a much easier route to an SEC East title than the Georgia Bulldogs.
"If I made the schedule, Georgia would be playing LSU and we'd be playing Ole Miss," Spurrier said.
Spurrier took to the podium on Tuesday as the first coach to speak at SEC Media Days, an annual meeting of media types and SEC coaches.
With the 2012 SEC schedule set, Spurrier noted what many college football analysts have been talking about for several months: the Gamecocks have a much tougher challenge to face in Baton Rouge against LSU than the Bulldogs do in a home game against the Ole Miss Rebels.
LSU, of course, won the SEC last year and got the chance to play in the national championship. Ole Miss was statistically the worst team in the conference last year, having not won a single conference game.
Scheduling, again, seems to be Spurrier's barrier to another SEC East title at South Carolina. The Gamecocks beat every single opponent in the East last year, but they were unable to come up with victories against the Auburn Tigers and the Arkansas Razorbacks.
The Bulldogs lost to South Carolina in conference play, but picked up an impressive strand of seven straight conference victories on their way to the East title.
The Gamecocks and the Bulldogs will meet in a game of their own on Oct. 6 at Williams-Brice Stadium.
