Troopers said the incident happened around 3:45 a.m. in the northbound lanes near mile marker 121.

Clarendon County Coroner Hayes Samuels identified the victim as 45-year-old George Albert Ross, Jr. of Manning.

Investigators said Ross was hit by a vehicle in the lane closest to the median. He died at the scene.

Troopers said the vehicle that hit Ross could be a wine in color 1997-2004 Ford F-150 Truck or a 1997-2002 Ford Expedition with a honeycomb grill. The area of damage is center and right front.

Investigators do not know why Ross was in the roadway.

The highway patrol's MAIT team is investigating.
