YEMASSEE, SC (WTOC) -
Deputies are continuing to investigate a deadly shooting that took place at a home on Pocotaligo Road in Yemassee. They say it all happened around 4:30 a.m. Sunday morning when Tamika Carter called 911, stating her estranged husband, Jerome Carter, 34, who was stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, was trying to force his way into the house.
They say the two were separated when it all happened.
While deputies were responding to the call, they were told a shooting took place at that same home. They say Tamika's boyfriend, Tusvon Russell, 26, was the shooter and took off in a car. They quickly located Russell not far from the home. When deputies arrived at the home, they found Carter in the hallway with a single gun shot wound to the chest. One neighbor told WTOC that she could hear the shots fired.
"It was extremely quiet, usually there is traffic, on the weekend's especially off and on all night," said Margean Baker. "There wasn't a single car and after awhile I heard two shots and about the time it would take to load a pistol, I heard three more shots."
Baker says it wasn't long until she heard sirens.
Carter was transported to Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston and later died. Deputies say they questioned Russell, but no charges have been filed at this time.
