Boat washes ashore, towed out to sea in Surfside Beach

SURFSIDE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Hundreds of beachgoers got quite a surprise Sunday morning when they headed out to the beach. A sailboat was washed right up onto the sand near Ocean Lakes.

The boat owners tell WMBF News, she and her husband live on Surfside Beach and they leave the boat anchored out in the water sometimes.

Saturday night the boat's two 65-foot anchors broke and by Sunday morning, it was stuck onshore. No one was on the sailboat when it washed aground.

Tamisha Coe, a witness on the beach, says she watched the whole thing happen.

"I think it's something to give everybody excitement, you know. You never see anything like this, and once you do, it's fun," said Coe.

Tow Boat US is on the beach working to remove the boat Monday afternoon, a job they estimate will take about an hour.

Katherine Coggeshall, wife of Tow Boat US owner Brian Coggeshall, says the hull of the boat has a crack in it.

Once the boat is towed back out to sea, the vessel will be deposited at one of their marinas either in Little River or Murrells Inlet.

No one has been cited since the boat washed ashore, confirmed HCPD spokesman Sgt. Robert Kegler.
