FOREST ACRES, SC (WIS) -
It all happened in broad daylight on Willingham Dr.
Forest Acres police say around 11 a.m., three men broke into a house while the owner was gone.
A landscaper working nearby noticed the intruders leaving and called out to them.
As the thieves drove away, investigators say one of them pulled out a gun and shot at the landscaper. He was not hit.
But neighbors are shaken.
"I heard two gunshots," said a woman named Cassie. WIS is protecting her identity.
Cassie lives not far from the burglarized home and attempted shooting. The gun shots woke her up.
"It freaked me out a little bit," she said. "Just knowing it sounded really close."
The expectant mother stayed inside.
She says Friday's events were unusual for her neighborhood full of retirees just off Forest Drive.
She said she was glad she skipped her daily workout.
"I was telling a neighbor earlier I ride my bike from the gym," she said. "I could have easily been in the path."
Investigators say they're following leads and looking for the getaway car - a blue Ford Crown Victoria.
At about the same time, another home was being burglarized on Partridge Ln., just off Percival Rd.
Investigators said a neighbor called police to report suspicious activity. The homeowner was not home at the time.
He said a flat screen, iPad and some jewelry were taken. The homeowner was preparing to move Saturday.
Aside from these two crimes, the police chief says there have been ten fewer burglaries this year compared to 2011.
Cassie said she will feel more at peace once she knows who's responsible.
"I'm just really hoping they get caught," she said.
