Troopers are investigating a deadly tractor trailer fire in the southbound lanes of Interstate 85 near uptown Charlotte.

At least one person was killed, according to the Charlotte Fire Department. Three vehicles and a tractor trailer were involved.

Investigators say 47-year-old Deborah Moss Suggs died in the crash. She lived near North Carolina coast, in Beaufort County. Suggs was a mother, wife and grandmother.

Another six people were injured and taken to Carolinas Medical Center Main and University for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

The accident happened near Exit 39 for Statesville Avenue.

The driver of the tractor-trailer told troopers he looked down and looked up to see several cars slowing down, but couldn't stop fast enough. He slammed into the car in front of him which caused a chain reaction.

NC Department of Transportation traffic cameras showed a tractor trailer in flames on the shoulder of the road.

WBTV contacted Performance Food Group, the company named on the side of the tractor trailer involved in the crash, for comment - but they have not returned our phone calls.
