CAMDEN, SC (WIS) -
The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control hit Kershaw Health with a $24,756 fine earlier this month after state regulators found the hospital committed multiple violations of the state's X-Ray regulations.
DHEC cited the hospital after "repeated failure" to: follow the law in handling x-ray personnel monitoring badges, not all personnel wore monitoring devices that would detect "scatter radiation, failure to timely conduct required audits to prevent exposure to radiation, no operating procedures on hand for DHEC review and staffers operating "the x-ray equipment did not have documentation ensuring they had received training," according to a DHEC report.
The agency also found Kershaw Health medical students "were being exposed to scatter radiation," during examinations, according to DHEC. The exposure came after the agency discovered the students were not wearing radiation monitoring badges, which are used to measure the amount of radiation a person may be exposed to.
The badges are a requirement under the state regulations.
DHEC also wrote the hospital up for the design of its cardiac catherization lab because it "deviates from the accepted shielding plan," according to the report.
The DHEC report shows Kershaw Health had no previous sanctions, but fined the hospital $24,756, with $18,032 to be forgiven if the hospital goes 18 months with no other violations. DHEC records show Kershaw Health paid $6,724 in fines as of a June 14 report.
