Bill giving free access to optional HPV vaccine vetoed

Posted: Updated:

Gov. Nikki Haley has vetoed a bill that would give free access to a vaccine preventing the sexually transmitted cancer virus known as HPV.

The measure would have made the HPV vaccine optional to 7th graders with their parents' permission.

The governor co-sponsored a bill in 2007 that would have made the vaccine mandatory, but this time around -- Haley says passing the bill would have been the first step to a taxpayer funded health care mandate.

Critics say the governor is putting politics ahead of an important health issue.
