FAIRFIELD COUNTY, SC (WIS) -

Dive teams have found the body of a man who went missing while swimming in Lake Monticello Saturday afternoon.

The Fairfield County Sheriff's Department says Jonathan Kornegay was at the Lake Monticello Recreation Park off Meadow Lake Drive when he went outside the roped-off swimming area and went under. He did not resurface.

Emergency teams were called to the swimming area at about 1 p.m. Dive teams found his body at about 8:30 Saturday night 10 feet from the shoreline.

Investigators say Kornegay drowned in five feet of water when his feet got tangled in the weeds outside the swimming area.  His drowning was ruled accidental.

Deputies say Kornegay, 24, was from Chester County and he had been swimming with several friends.

The Department of Natural Resources says Kornegay was wearing a T-shirt, shorts, shoes, and a monitoring band on his ankle when he entered the water.  But the water disrupted the frequency emitted by the monitoring device, so it did not help searchers find him.

Kornegay was listed as a registered sex offender in South Carolina.

SLED's web site says he was convicted in 2009 for committing or attempting to commit a lewd act on a minor, a 15 year old girl.

Dive teams from Prosperity, Lexington County and Horry County were training at the other end of the lake when they got the call to respond to the swimming area to search for Kornegay.

About 10 to 15 divers searched for Kornegay before finding his body.
