CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

Police say they have arrested a man for raping a woman along Interstate 77 in Charlotte in 1996.

According to Charlotte Mecklenburg Police, Bryan S. Davis, 53, was arrested by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Violent Criminal Apprehension Team and was charged with second degree rape.

Police say a woman was walking along the side of I-77 in May 1996 when she says a man began approaching her on foot in an aggressive manor.

The victim attempted to flee to a nearby neighborhood for assistance, police say, when the man grabbed her and forcibly raped her.  The man then ran from the area.

Detectives with the CMPD Sexual Assault Cold Case Unit were able to re-examine the evidence for the incident and submit it to the CMPD lab.

The lab then reported that the DNA evidence submitted matched that of David.  Detectives signed a warrant for 2nd Degree Rape Davis on Wednesday.

Police say he was arrested on Thursday along the 300 block of Freeland Lane in the Sedgefield area of Charlotte. He is being held in the Mecklenburg County Jail.
