Low carb or low fat diets

(Undated) May 17, 2004 - In the diet wars, which works best: low carb or low fat? Two new studies try to get to the bottom of this debate.

Low carb diets produce slightly greater weight loss for the first six months. But after a year, there's no significant advantage, and living without carbs is too hard for most people to maintain.

On the low fat front, people do tend to lose weight by choosing leaner meats and dairy products, But low fat dieters often forget that cutting calories is at the core of weight loss.

Study authors say whether you choose low carb or low fat, the key to long-term weight loss is cutting calories.
