NOAA Hurricane Season Prediction: An average year ahead

"Nine to fifteen named storms."  said National Hurricane Center Director Rick Knabb in a press conference today.  NOAA released its annual long range predictions for the Atlantic Hurricane Season.

In comparison, last year we saw 19 named storms in the Atlantic, including 7 hurricanes.  Similarly this season the Hurricane Center is anticipating four to eight hurricanes with one to three making major hurricane (> Cat 3) status.

Knabb also talked about a new program that will use robotic boats to detect conditions at or near the center of developing storms to try to better understand what makes 'big' hurricanes become that way.

Hurricane season got started a bit early with Tropical Storm Alberto in mid May.  Officially the start of hurricane season begins on June 1st.
