Drexel family dedicates tree in Brittanee's honor - wistv.com - Columbia, South Carolina

Tree planted in Market Common in honor of Brittanee Drexel

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) Friends and family of Brittanee Drexel, the New York teen missing from Myrtle Beach since April 2009, gathered in Market Common Saturday and planted a tree in Grand Park in Brittanee's honor.

The family dedicated an area open for anyone wishing to pray for Brittanee Drexel.

Balloons marked the spot where family, friends and supporters met three years after Drexel's disappearance.

Dawn Drexel, Brittanee's mother, read a poem and later told WMBF News that the tree and the poem symbolize hope.

"A tree symbolizes hope. It symbolizes that we're always looking for her and we're not gonna stop until we find her," Drexel said.

A recent story WMBF News brought to you about Brittanee's father Chad Drexel was mentioned at the dedication Saturday.  Dawn Drexel disagrees with the statements Chad Drexel made.

"{Police}They're all working as hard as they can on her case. So in regards to what her father may have said, you know I'm in contact with the police all the time, I'm down here for every search, so I know that they're still working on it and they're still looking for her," Drexel said.

Myrissa Drexel was 11 years old at the time of her older sister's disappearance. She told WMBF News that she needs her big sister.

"I've grown older. I want her to see how grown up I've gotten. What I've gotten from her, the way she used to do her make up and her hair... is the way I do mine now," Myrissa Drexel said.

Dawn Drexel said she will never stop looking for her daughter, and she hopes the new dedicated area at Market Common will allow people to hold on to hope too.

"People need to be aware that this happens everyday. They need to be aware and we need to keep her face out there so people are still looking for her. Because she hasn't been found," Dawn Drexel said.

Drexel went missing in April of 2009, while on a Spring Break trip with friends.

Since that time, searchers have scoured the area, looking for any clues as to where she may have gone, but with no luck.
