Like it or not, it's pollen season

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Perhaps you've seen the clouds of yellow wafting through the Midlands in the past few days. Or maybe your car has a nice tinge of yellow to its color. Either way, you've probably gathered that the pollen has finally arrived.

But how do you find relief? Allergist David Amrol says it's important to have some coping strategies and it's easy to mistake a cold for an allergy.

"Usually if it's a virus or a cold it's going to come on pretty quickly. It will last 1 to 2 weeks," Amrol said.

But if it's a true allergy, you can count on it to stick around.

"You can try nasal saline rinses like neti pots or a salt water rise," Amrol said.

If you're still not feeling relief, it may be time to talk to an allergist who can offer specialized therapy like allergy shots.

"It's not a quick fix, but over time it can make you less allergic and help all these symptoms on a long-term basis," Amrol said.

Amrol also says to let your symptoms drive whether or not you need medication, not the pollen count.
