Court employees mourn clerk's death

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - People who work at the Richland County Courthouse are mourning the loss of a longtime colleague.

Gail McFall was killed in a traffic accident on Saturday, according to the coroner Gary Watts.

McFall worked in the Clerk of Court's office for 20 years.

"The courthouse, think about it, every single day the parking lot is full of people, so people come up here every single day and conduct business, some of it good, some of it bad -- most of it bad and she was just a smiling face to a lot of people," said Richland County Solicitor Dan Johnson.

Watts says McFall, 49, left the road and struck a large sign at the intersection of Laurel Street and Two Notch.

The single mother worked one floor below Johnson in the records department.

When her son was young, she asked Johnson, then a young assistant, to coach him in football.

"She was involved, very involved" said Johnson. "She was just a good mama really."

McFall's coworkers say she was a good friend.

"We're devastated," said a co-worker. "When she was off, we'd be like, 'You got to get back. This place is so solemn without you.' Even when she was out sick, we were texting her because she carried this department. She's irreplaceable. Irreplaceable."

Those who knew the person behind the desk say this may be the toughest loss the court has ever seen.

"I've seen a lot of senseless death and hers is just so sad, so sad," said Johnson.

The Columbia Police Department is still investigating the crash.
