Drivers groan as gas could hit $4 a gallon

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - If you've been refilling your car with gas in the past few weeks, perhaps you've noticed the steady rise in price? Just in time for the spring and summer seasons, gas could hit $4 a gallon in just a few weeks.

That news almost brought Nica James to tears.

"I don't know what to say because I'm just not going to be driving only when necessary," said James. "I just have to laugh to keep from crying, you've heard that saying before?"

It's what the single mom from Bamberg keeps telling herself to stay motivated. She quit her job in Columbia recently because the hour and half drive is too expensive.

"Gas is ridiculous," said James. "They don't realize who it effects."

With higher prices looming, drivers like James are already thinking about what they may have to cut.

"Our vacation every year to Florida, so hopefully it'll come down," said driver Wanda Newkirk. "But if not, we'll just have to make adjustments in other things."

It won't be the first time South Carolina drivers spent $4 dollars on gas. Three years ago, we were paying $4.12 a gallon.

Analysts blame Iran's threat to stop the flow of 20 percent of the world's oil through the Strait of Hormuz for pumping up the price.

The Middle Eastern strife is forcing James to find ways to cutback even more.

"You gotta eat," said James. "It's like what can you do?  Just pray, 'cause it's only so much you can cut."
