NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -
A 21-year-old woman was sentenced to a year in prison and five years probation after pleading guilty Wednesday to felony DUI charges stemming from a July 2011 wreck that killer a passenger in her car.
South Carolina state troopers say Evelyn Freeman of Goose Creek was brought to the hospital after she crashed her car on Interstate 26 on the morning of July 6, 2011. Highway patrol says the deadly accident happened around 2 a.m. and was caused by drinking and driving. The passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.
Witnesses say a white Ford Expedition was seen driving recklessly, swerving in and out of traffic on I-26. According to authorities, the SUV then hit a concrete median wall and the passenger was ejected onto the highway. The driver then traveled across four lanes of traffic, lost control and went into ditch.
The victim was identified as 28-year-old Terral Freeman. The victim and suspect are not related.
Evelyn Freeman has a prior criminal record dating back to 2008. Freeman was arrested for drugs in 2008, 2010 and 2011. She also has a failure to appear from January.
