BERMUDA (WCSC) - Two women were each sentenced to six years in jail after trying to smuggle drugs into Bermuda aboard the Carnival Fantasy, which left port in Charleston last October.

According to The Royal Gazette, a Bermuda judge sentenced 24-year-old Alloah Releford and 27-year-old Latoya Powell to six years in prison.

The Georgia women boarded the Carnival Fantasy in Charleston on Oct. 8 and tried to bring in 2.7 kilograms of cannabis resin worth $400,000. Authorities say the women were part of a smuggling ring.

Bermuda police apprehended Powell in the duo's shared cabin after the ship arrived at King's Wharf, Dockyard. According to the Gazette, Powell admitted she had packages strapped to her body and claimed she didn't; know what was inside. Police then detained Releford who also admitted that the two women had been told to take the packages to Bernard Park.

Police found nine packages, which contained cannabis resin, or hashish, which is normally sold locally in half-gram twists at $50 each.

The drugs had a total street value of $406,550. The women had each been offered $5,000 to bring the drugs to Bermuda.
