SC high school, NFL star dies at 59

SUMTER, SC (WIS) - The man many regard as South Carolina's best high school football player ever has passed away.

Sumter native Freddie Solomon died Monday afternoon in Tampa, Florida. He was 59 years old. He had been battling colon and liver cancer the past 9 months.   

Solomon was an exciting quarterback who could beat you running and throwing. He played his college football at the University of Tampa before moving on to the National Football League. He played 11 seasons as a wide receiver with the Miami Dolphins and San Francisco 49ers.

Solomon was a member of the 49ers first two Super Bowl teams. His 43 touchdown catches are tied for sixth most in team history.
