LEXINGTON COUNTY, SC (WIS) - Detectives are investigating the death of a 43-year-old man who was fatally shot in the leg early Sunday morning near Swansea.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said detectives are pursuing leads concerning the identity of the person or persons who shot Matthew Milhouse, Jr., 43, at his Calhoun Rd. home.

Metts said the incident happened around 2:30 a.m. The circumstances of the fatal shooting as well as the motive for the killing remain under investigation, the sheriff said.

The sheriff's department received a report from a neighbor at about 2:42 a.m. on Sunday that Milhouse had been fatally shot at his home, Metts said. Deputies found Milhouse's body in the kitchen at his residence. He had been shot in the leg.

Lexington County Coroner Harry O. Harman said Milhouse died within minutes of being shot. The gunshot lacerated blood vessels in Milhouse's leg, resulting in massive blood loss, said Harman.

Metts urges anyone with information about Milhouse or the fatal shooting to call the Lexington County Sheriff's Department at (803) 785-8230 or CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC. Citizens also can provide information anonymously by accessing the Crime Tip link on the Sheriff's Department web site (www.lexingtonsheriff.com).
