Dog stolen from animal shelter returned

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Columbia Police say one of several dogs stolen from the animal shelter has been safely returned.

Police say a woman found the dog wandering in a park a little more than a week ago, and took it to a veterinarian to be checked out. Marli Drum with Columbia Animal Services says the woman recognized the dog from photos she had seen in the media.

Drum says the woman took good care of the dog.

"Momma" was one of 11 dogs stolen in two separate break-ins at the animal shelter on Humane Lane over the past two weeks.

Police increased security at the shelter after the break-ins.

Drum says the shelter is happy to have Momma back in its care and Animal Services encourages people to look out for the other dogs that were stolen.

If you know anything about the break-ins, or know where the other dogs are, call Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
